Capitol Hill History
More than a century ago, Capitol Hill was referred to as Broadway Hill, after the main thoroughfare in the area. The origin of the neighborhood’s current name continues to be disputed. Some say it was named Capitol Hill by real estate developer James A. Moore to encourage the Washington government to relocate from Seattle from Olympia. Others say Moore named it after his wife’s hometown neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. The area was also referred to as “Catholic Hill” through the 1980s because of its large Roman Catholic population.
In 1891, the Woman’s Center Club was founded. The club constructed the Harvard Exit Theatre building in 1925 as its clubhouse. The club still meets at this building.
Distinguished apartment houses include a few Classical Revival complexes. After World War II, the architecture in Capitol Hill changed to contemporary architecture with large view windows. Today Capitol Hill is the center of some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city of Seattle, including the Harvard-Belmont Landmark District and “Millionaire’s Row.”
In the early 1960s, a large number of gay and lesbian couples moved into the Capitol Hill neighborhood. During the 1990s, the area became known as the center of the grunge scene in music. Since 1997, Capitol Hill has hosted the annual Capitol Hill Block party in July. Capitol Hill is also home to the most prominent locally owned coffeehouses in the city, including Seattle-based chains such as Starbucks, Tully’s Coffee, and Seattle’s Best Coffee.
