City of Renton History
Renton is one of the fastest growing cities in King County, Washington. With a population of 90,927 residents, Renton is the 4th largest city in King County and has the 8th largest population in the state. Before the arrival of European settlers, this land near the southeast shore of Lake Washington, was an important salmon fishing area for Native Americans.
In 1860, Henry Tobin and his wife Diana Tobin were the first Europeans to arrive in the area. The town of Renton was founded by Erasmus M. Smithers in 1895 as the Renton Cooperative Coal Organization. Coal mining and timber processing soon became the most important economic industries for the area.
Later in the 20th century when World War II occurred, the population dramatically increased after Boeing built a factory in Renton to produce the B-29 Superfortress. Today, the Renton Factory produces the 737 airliner.
In the 1990s, Renton became the first city in the Pacific Northwest to have an IKEA store. The downtown core of the city also underwent major redevelopment with the construction of a new town square, The Piazza. In 2008, a new branch of the Federal Reserve Bank opened in Renton.
Today, Boeing Company, Valley Medical Center, Renton School District No. 403, Federal Aviation Administration, and Paccar are the city’s largest employers. Jimi Hendrix is buried in Renton’s Greenwood cemetery. Other notable residents include Brandon Roy and Sean Kinney.
