City of Seattle History

Seattle is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. With a population of roughly 3.6 million residents, Seattle is quickly becoming a major gateway for trade with Asia. Prior to the arrival of European settlers, Seattle was inhabited for more than 4,000 years by Native Americans.

Seattle has experienced a series of boom and bust cycles. With an ideal location near natural and mineral resources, Seattle first experienced a boom in the 19th century as a timber town. However, the city suffered a setback when the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 destroyed the city’s central business district. The second boom occurred as a result of the Klondike Gold Rush which lasted until the early part of the 20th century and resulted in the founding of many Seattle companies, including Nordstrom and Eddie Bauer.

This boom was followed by a shipbuilding boom which took place during World War I. Seattle again become a center of prosperity during World War Ii when the city was used build Boeing aircraft. Seattle was the headquarters of Boeing until 2001 when the headquarters moved to Chicago.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Seattle again began to rise, this time as a technology hub, becoming home to companies, such as Amazon.com, RealNetworks, Nintendo of America, VoiceStream (now T-Mobile), and others. The success of the city attracted many new residents, which began the city’s rise as a global city.

Today, Seattle’s economy is a mix of industrial and technology companies. The Port of Seattle is the 8th largest port in the United States in terms of container capacity, making Seattle a major trade hub.
